Minnesota Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon will miss Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bears due to an ankle injury, the team announced Saturday.

McKinnon had been holding out hope that he’d avoid missing any time after suffering the injury last Sunday, but the designation became official after he was forced to sit out the entire week of practice.

Matt Asiata now steps into the featured role atop the Vikings’ running back depth chart, with Ronnie Hillman standing by as a change-of-pace and rotational option.

While Minnesota has managed to withstand the loss of Adrian Peterson to this point, sitting in first place in the NFC North with a 5-1 record, the running game remains a concern looking ahead.

The Vikings will look to do anything they can to improve upon their league-worst mark of 2.6 yards per carry.
