If the Toronto Blue Jays are going to lock down a ninth-inning lead in Game 1 of the ALDS, they might have to do it without Roberto Osuna.
After the 21-year-old reliever injured his shoulder in Tuesday’s wild-card game against the Baltimore Orioles, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters Thursday he was unsure if the closer would make an appearance in the series opener against Texas.
With Osuna’s shoulder still a concern, the club omitted speedster Dalton Pompey from the division series roster in favor of extra bullpen arms.
“We think he’s going to be fine, but you’ve got to cover yourself,” Gibbons said.
In Osuna’s absence, Gibbons expects to use southpaw Francisco Liriano as a late-inning reliever.
Osuna left Monday’s game in the 10th inning with a trainer after experiencing tightness in his shoulder.
