Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak will take a week of rest after spending Sunday night in hospital with a complex migrane, general manager John Elway announced Monday.

Kubiak will not make the trip to San Diego for Thursday’s game against the Chargers, and special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillas will step in as the interim coach in his absence.

Elway told reporters that the plan is for Kubiak to return to work next Monday, and that he’s “very encouraged” by his head coach’s health after the brief hospital stay.

Almost perfectly following up a Super Bowl title captured in Kubiak’s first year at the helm, the Broncos sit tied atop the AFC West with a 4-1 record after the first five games of the season.

Elway pointed to DeCamillas’ strength in game-management skills as a primary reason for the decision to make him the interim coach this week.
