While things would unravel for pitcher Shelby Miller and the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second inning and beyond, outfielder Gregor Blanco made sure he escaped the opening frame unscathed.
With two outs recorded in the inning, Oakland Athletics outfielder Matt Joyce sent a 91-mph Miller offering to deep center field. Blanco timed the catch perfectly to keep the game scoreless.
Blanco, 32, played 106 games with the San Francisco Giants in 2016, missing time with a shoulder injury. He signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks in January. Over five seasons with the Giants, he hit .259/.338/.360 with 75 stolen bases.
The first-inning magic didn’t carry over as the Athletics would later score 11 runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 19-10 lead.
