Instant replay was instituted into Major League Baseball in order to make sure the correct call will always be made on the field, though the system still causes much debate.
Even with the addition of multiple camera angles, replay was criticized heavily during a close play in the sixth inning of Game 3 of the NLDS between the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants on Monday.
Cubs shortstop Javier Baez made a fantastic play to get the ball to first base where Anthony Rizzo made a scoop to record the out.
The Giants challenged the play, arguing that Rizzo’s foot came off the bag before the catch was made. After review, the call on the field as upheld, as the replay judge ruled that Rizzo kept contact with the base to record the out before his foot came off.
