Free-agent running back Tim Hightower is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, a source told ESPN’s Mike Triplett.

Hightower has proven to be a capable backup over the past two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, racking up nearly 1,000 rushing yards and nine touchdowns over that time.

The 30-year-old’s play is even more impressive considering he was out of football from 2012-14 due to a torn ACL and an ensuing infection.

Carlos Hyde sits atop the 49ers’ depth chart, and the team made Kyle Juszczyk the league’s highest-paid fullback this offseason, but San Francisco could still use a more established backup to ease the load on Hyde, who’s dealt with injuries throughout his three-year career.
