The Kansas City Chiefs placed defensive lineman Allen Bailey on injured reserve with a shoulder issue, the team announced Tuesday.

Bailey has been a key contributor for a stout front seven over each of the past three seasons, and his contributions against the run, in particular, will be missed.

The veteran’s absence should bump second-round rookie Chris Jones into a more significant role alongside Dontari Poe and Jaye Howard.

Kendall Reyes, a second-round pick of the division-rival San Diego Chargers in 2012, was also signed in a corresponding move to address the depth up front.
