Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was injured after San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon collided with him on the sidelines during Sunday’s game.

Medical staff stabilized Phillips’ head and neck before he was carted to the locker room and taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The popular 69-year-old coach appeared to hit his head when falling backwards as a result of the collision.

Phillips was described as “alert” and had movement in all his extremities by Broncos vice president of public relations Patrick Smyth.

Linebackers coach Reggie Herring will take over defensive play-calling duties, according to the team.
